“I Can’t Take It Anymore”: What To Do When You Think This Way

We all have our emotional and mental limits and when we push beyond those limits, our energy begins to wane, and then we’re left with nothing but extreme fatigue. And I’m not talking about just physical fatigue but mental and emotional one too!

So, when your resiliency is low and when you’re on the edge of your limits, what can you do? I’ve seen people ignore their limits and carry on as if nothing’s wrong, but then I’ve also seen them crumble under the weight of mental distress.

When this happens, there’s one thought that might swirl in your head, “I can’t take it anymore” or “I can’t cope anymore!” and trust me, when these thoughts occur, it could be a big danger sign.

When you can’t take it anymore, there are some things that you can remind yourself of and that’s what we’re exploring in this article.

Below, I’ve listed a few things that you can do to fix when you “can’t take it anymore”.

“I Can’t Take It Anymore” What To Do?

1. Know That You’re Stronger Than You Think

When you begin to think that you can’t cope anymore, remind yourself that you’re stronger than this. Think about the time when you were stuck in a bad situation and still made it out. You can, maybe, try to write out small reminders and stick them on your work desk or around the house. This will help you recognize that you’re strong and you can do this.

You can also try to reach out to a loved one, maybe a friend or a family member, who knows how to support and encourage you to keep going.

2.Take One Day At A Time

One of the things I’ve realized over time is that you can’t push yourself beyond your limits because if you do, then you’ll be subjecting yourself to an overload – and not of a good kind. Instead of dwelling on your past or the future, try your best to focus on the present. If you’re not in a good shape, then it’s OK. Don’t judge yourself.

Try some grounding exercises and learn how you can be present at the moment. The moment your mind begins to drift towards hurt, that’s the moment you begin to lose yourself. Don’t do that!

3.You Can Still Be Happy

This too shall pass” ever heard of this? Well, if you have then good for you! This is a phrase that reminds you that no matter how bleak things are or how you think you can’t cope with them anymore, it’s just a fleeting thing. This phase will pass soon and you’ll once again find yourself happy and focused.

Just give it some time. Try to find your happy place and remind yourself that you can be happy still. And if you’re in a tough situation, then remember, happiness might not be near, but it’s on the way.

4.Get Those Endorphins

If you’re constantly thinking, “I can’t cope anymore”, then there’s nothing better than to go out and get some fresh air. This kind of thinking can be born out of helplessness and too much stress too, and it is said that spending time in nature can help you ease your stress and anxiety and even boost your mood.

So go out and get those endorphins your mind and body need. Here are some exercises you can try to get those happy hormones;

  • Go on a walk
  • Go for a jog
  • Go swimming
  • Do some weight-lifting
  • Try yoga or Tai Chi

5.Reach Out For Help

When you’re struggling to get back into your routine and stay resilient, consider reaching out to a counselor for help. A counselor can help you figure out what’s causing you to be on edge all the time and think that you can’t take it anymore. They can also help you find new coping habits, best suited according to your needs.

If you’re thinking about suicide or are having suicidal or self-harm thoughts then you can reach out to Lifeline number at 988 for immediate assistance. You can also try reaching out to your local emergency shelter for help.

Why Do You Feel Like You Can’t Take It Anymore?

Many reasons can make you think you “can’t take it anymore”. Sometimes, it could be stress, and other times it could be anxiety. When you’re too stressed or struggling with chronic stress, your body releases cortisol (the stress hormone) and activates your fight-flight-freeze response. If you can’t control cortisol levels on time, then the stress response puts you in a continuous state of anxiety.

Chronic stress, if left unaddressed and untreated, could lead to bigger problems like;

  • Depression
  • Anxiety, and even
  • Addiction

The best ways you can manage stress levels can be by making changes to your diet, regularly practicing meditation, doing regular exercise, and changing your environment from stressful to stress-free.

Final Thoughts

When you begin to think, “I can’t take it anymore” or “I can’t do it anymore”, then it could be your stress levels peaking. With the right help and management tips, you can change your thinking. Try to remind yourself that you are stronger than you think, to take things one step at a time and that you can still find happiness if you stay in the moment.

Feeling overwhelmed and low on resiliency is common, but with the right help and support, you can cope with anything that life throws your way.

Be an inspiration and don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. You can call a friend or family member, speak to a therapist, or even reach out to a crisis helpline number for emotional and mental support.

Don’t let the fatigue of pushing past your limits bring you down. Remember, you’re not alone and that you can do this!
