5 Self-Care Habits That You Might NOT Know

Self-care is an amazing concept, one that has become popular in recent times. Practicing self-care has many benefits and can help with your overall health and wellness. Self-care has many types:

  • Mental Self-care
  • Emotional Self-care
  • Physical Self-care
  • Spiritual Self-care

Among other self-care activities. Many people believe that self-care only involves taking a mental health break, soaking in a bubble bath, or going to a spa and while these are some valid examples of self-care, they are not all.

Every one of us has a different type of self-care activity that we prefer over others, some of these activities are not common and are not known to many.

What you need to remember is that self-care isn’t selfish and making yourself a priority isn’t a bad thing. When you don’t care about yourself, it can cause you to feel more stressed and anxious.

Taking care of yourself shouldn’t come at your expense. It is important to enjoy your self-care routine. The best self-care is spending time with yourself, getting to know yourself better, or treating yourself to something you love. But there are other self-care activities that you can partake in.

Self-care essentially means that you are aware of your needs and wants and you are taking some time to take care of them and are engaging in activities that make you feel good.

As I said before, self-care isn’t just about soaking in a bath, reading a book, or going to a massage – it is so much more than that. Here are some of the self-care habits that you might NOT know about.

5 Examples Of Daily Self-Care

1. Avoiding Toxic People Or Situations

In our life, we meet very different people – some interesting, some not so interesting. Some people stay in our lives for good and some of them choose not to. In my life, I found that cutting some relationships helped me take care of my mental and emotional health. I realized that some of my relationships were toxic and were spreading negativity in my life.

Avoiding or eliminating toxic relationships and situations can be amazing for your mental health and sometimes it is for the best. It is important to note when others start to disrespect your boundaries and ignore your beliefs. You need to be mindful of how the people around you are treating you.

Toxic relationships can be anywhere – at home, at work, or socially. Self-care is about taking care not only of your relationships but also of who you are letting in your life. Self-care requires you to have control over who you choose to spend your time with and who you need to let go of. You need to let go of people who are not good for your mental peace.

If someone is being disrespectful towards you or is mistreating you, then you need to step back and reevaluate your relationship with them. Remember, negativity can be contagious. Surround yourself with positive people and situations as much as you can.

2. Doing A Social Media Detox

Social media has been a part of our lives for some time now and while it has its advantages, it has equal disadvantages. Being on social media can be exciting and intriguing and it can cater to your various needs as well. But spending time on social media can become overwhelming too, not to mention dangerous to your mental and emotional wellness.

One another example of self-care is doing a social media detox. Taking a break from social media can help you in many ways. Social media is a place where a person is constantly comparing themselves and their lives with those of others. It can be a toxic place and can negatively affect your mindset.

Taking a break from social media can help refresh your mind. Take a day or two off social media and go spend time with your family, or go for a nature retreat. Self-care means you take time to understand yourself and what your body and mind need. The least you can do is fulfill those needs. Social media can be a distraction or a hindrance and can trigger stress or anxiety.

3. Doing Something Creative

Another amazing example of self-care that you can try is doing something creative. It can be anything – writing, crafting, or painting. You can try creating something from scratch or rearrange your furniture. For me, creating something involves baking or cooking something from scratch; for my mom, it’s about crafting something from waste.

For you, it can be anything you enjoy doing with your hands. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated. You can try creating something such as:

The idea behind this self-care habit is to engage in something that stimulates your mind and gets your creativity flowing. The goal is to do or make something that makes you feel happy.

4. Joining A Support Group

While not many people believe, joining a support group is another amazing way of self-care. It is brave when someone reaches out for help. Joining a support group or a community is exactly that. Joining a group allows you to meet like-minded people who, like you, want to bring a change to their lifestyle.

Whatever you’re dealing with, someone out there is dealing with the same thing. You are not alone and joining a support group ensures that.

Here are some support groups you can join:

5. Seeking Professional Help

This may not look like but seeking professional help is a self-care practice. As I mentioned before, self-care is about knowing what you need and taking steps to make sure you get that. How is seeking help any different? When you choose to get help in bettering yourself and your mental health, it is a step toward making yourself a priority.
