“You have such a warm personality!”

 “Oh, you’re such a warm-hearted person.”

We all like listening to phrases like this, right? I mean, who wouldn’t like when others describe us as warm? When our personalities develop, there are certain traits we adopt and I’m talking about the traits beyond the psychologically defined ones.

I’m talking about the personality traits that define our values and character. The kind of traits that others see and can easily describe us as.

Here, I’m talking about a warm personality! Let’s imagine a scenario; you go to a social gathering and don’t know anyone there. But someone comes up to you and starts a conversation.

They ask you questions, make some light-hearted jokes, and even help you get to know others at the party. They help you feel comfortable and at ease. This person is what we can call a “warm personality”.

They are kind, affectionate, and friendly. A warm personality welcomes you with energy and affection that can rival the comfort of a warm cup of tea on a winter day. Whereas a “cold personality” is someone who comes off as aloof, indifferent, and emotionally distant.

Below, let’s take a look at the traits of a warm personality, the benefits, and how can you become a warm person.

Warm Personality Traits

While there is no set definition of a warm personality, there are many theories that can help explain a warm personality. In a 2015 paper, it was mentioned that a warm personality can be linked with extraversion – one of the Big 5 Personality Traits. However, it was also found that introverted people can also have warm personalities.

In another study, it was found that warm people are less likely to be egotistical and are more likely to consider others’ perspectives and understand that some perspectives are different from theirs. In simple words, a warm personality is more likely to be empathetic than a cold personality.

However, not all people who come off as warm personalities are empathetic. Some people may also use their warm personality traits to manipulate others.

Some common warm personality traits include;

1. Kindness: Warm personalities are the most kind-hearted people you’ll ever meet. They will always look out for you even when you’re far away.

2. Generosity: Warm personalities never hesitate to lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. They never expect anything in return and only want to see you happy.

3. Sociable: A warm personality is sociable and can make anyone feel comfortable in a social environment. They don’t judge, become jealous, or criticize unnecessarily.

4. Friendly: Again, you’ll never find a warm personality lacking friendliness. They include everyone in their social circle and want everyone to feel included.

5. Reliable: No matter the hurt you’ve experienced, a warm personality will always be there for you. They’ll be there when you need them, even when you want to be vulnerable.

6. Protectiveness: A warm personality is fiercely protective of the ones they care about and will protect them from all harm.

7. Maturity: Just because they’re generous and kind, it should not be taken for naivety. They are mature beyond their age and are resilient enough to take on any challenge life throws their way.

Warm Personality vs. Warm-Hearted Person

While many people use these two terms interchangeably; there’s a difference between a warm personality and a warm-hearted person. A warm-hearted person is when you’re caring and compassionate to your core but a warm personality is a way others see you or how you come across to others.

For example; if you’re sick and a coworker who rarely talks to you and is more aloof-like would help you finish your workload. Even though they may have a “cold personality” they are a warm-hearted person to do these things for you.

Similarly, some people can come off as warm but are cold-hearted. They might be friendly but they still may find it hard to express empathy and compassion for others.

Benefits Of Having A Warm Personality

The way your personality develops can depend a lot on your culture and social norms. There’s nothing wrong with being a cold personality but many people automatically assume that having a “cold personality” is something negative.

Having a warm personality can help you become more confident in social situations and improve your communication skills. A warm personality may also help you become approachable to your coworkers, strangers, and other people you come in contact with. Because of your warm personality, others may find it easier to open up to you, ask questions, and share ideas.

How To Develop A Warm Personality?

If you want to improve your personality traits and come across as a warm personality in social events, then here are some tips to help you develop a warm personality:

  • Practice Active Listening

Warm personalities are good listeners so if you want to develop a warm personality, you need to try active listening. This practice can include learning to focus on what the other person is saying, getting less distracted, offering non-verbal cues to show your interest, asking questions to show you’re listening and pausing before you respond.

This practice can help improve your relationships with others and can help you come across as an affectionate person.

  • Ask Questions

Engaging ones at that! A warm personality is good at starting and holding conversations with everyone, regardless of their status. Try to engage in social situations by asking engaging questions to keep the discussion going. You can ask others to share their input and weigh in on the discussion.

Here are some engaging questions you can get started with:

  • Which series do you enjoy watching?
  • I’m not familiar with this music. Where do you think I should begin if I want to listen to this band?
  • What do you like doing in your free time? I like hiking.

Doing this will help them see that you’re interested in their ideas and appreciate the time and attention you’re giving them.

  • Boost Your Self-Esteem

People who’re socially awkward, anxious, or shy may also come off as aloof and distant even if they have a warm personality. There’s nothing wrong with being socially awkward or shy but boosting and improving your self-esteem can help you become more confident in social situations.

You can try to work on your self-talk, practice self-compassion, use daily positive affirmations, or even celebrate little things you achieve in the day.

Bottom Line

No matter your upbringing or socio-economic status, you can be a warm personality when you come off as friendly, agreeable, enthusiastic, compassionate, and affectionate to others. This does not mean that you’re a warm-hearted person though. There is a difference between having a warm personality and being a warm-hearted person.

With the above-mentioned tips, you too can improve your traits and become a warm personality. All you need to work on is your listening skills and confidence. With little effort and practice, you can develop a warm personality too!
