bioenergetic therapy

Bioenergetic therapy is a kind of mind-body psychotherapy that is based on the neurobiological connection. The main focus is on treating the body alongside your mind. Bioenergetic therapists believe that the mind and the body are connected.

The connection they state is with respect to the reactions we have to certain situations in our mind and in our body. The way our mind reacts is reflected in our bodily expression and vice versa.

Basically, bioenergetic therapy works on the principle that the brain influences the body and the body influences the mind. If your brain is feeling a certain way your body will show that in your actions and if your body is feeling a certain way, your brain will work accordingly as well.

I hope I haven’t confused you with this body-mind interlink in actions! Okay, let’s understand the techniques of bioenergetic therapy so that you can understand how this therapy works.

But first, let’s get to the basics of bioenergetic therapy….

What Is Bioenergetic Therapy?

Bioenergetic therapy tries to explore your mind, body and spirit all together because bioenergetic therapists believe that all three are interconnected. But most importantly the body and mind connection matters the most.

The word ‘bioenergetic’ has a Greek origin, bio means life and energetic has come from the word ‘Energia’ which means energy. The bioenergetic therapists use various exercises for the body which heals the body and indirectly heals the mind as well.

Bioenergetic therapists believe that if the reactions of the body to stress are controlled you can eventually control the reactions of your mind to stress as well. The therapists may use movement, breathwork, dialogue or even touch so that you can release the stress and tension that you’ve stored in your mind.

To understand bioenergetic therapy better, you need to know about its techniques.

And I am here to do just that!

There are various techniques used by therapists. It can be in accordance with your therapist’s specialty or a technique you think will be suitable for you to express your feelings and emotions freely.

Here are all the techniques used by bioenergetic therapists…

1. Grounding

Grounding is a bioenergetic technique that will make you do some physical movement or exercise so that you can feel rooted. The aim of these exercises is to basically help you become mindful and be in the present moment. This technique will help you get rid of the express tension and energy stored in you.

2. Sensory Awareness

Sensory awareness is another bioenergetic therapy technique whose aim is similar to that of the grounding technique, it helps you release excess tension. In this technique, you are supposed to practice self-awareness. You have to be aware of all the senses that you are experiencing in the present moment.

3. Movement

Movement techniques are being used in bioenergetic therapy a lot.  Your therapist will guide you to release all you’re pent-up emotions and tension through movement. Your bioenergetic therapist might ask you to walk or run or perhaps dance for that matter.

Basically, you will be asked to indulge in some kind of movement in order to release the anger and frustration. Does punching a pillow sound good to you?

4. Containing

Containing can be a slightly difficult technique. You basically have to refrain from any movement that your body is making so that you can understand what’s going on in your mind in peace. You will have to avoid the urge to maybe tap your feet or twirl a pencil between your fingers, etc. you have to sit still and explore your mind.

5. Supportive contact

This is a kind of technique a lot of us might have done with someone in stress but we just didn’t know what we were doing.

In this bioenergetics technique, the therapist will administer supportive contact with you by either holding your hand or placing their hand on your shoulder, eyes, stomach, etc while you are expressing your feelings. Supportive contact gives you the strength to let it all out.
