All you need to know about Adaptogens

There are many natural and synthetic supplements available to help with anxiety, depression, stress, and other psychological issues. But out of those, some supplements are not all compatible for many. Allergies and infections are always a worry when using supplements.

Adaptogens are herbal supplements that can be taken to improve the adrenal function of the body. The adrenal system is in charge of managing the hormonal response to stress and anxiety. Adaptogens have the ability to adapt their function with the body’s needs, hence the name.


Adaptogens have been used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicinal practices for centuries. Adaptogens have proved to have many positive benefits in treating stress-related issues. These adaptogens give a subtle boost to the body and help to deal with stressful situations with some ease.

Adaptogens work according to the body’s needs. If the body and nerves need a boost to the system or if it needs to calm down, adaptogens will work to bring that balance.

Which Adaptogens to Use

1.Asian Ginseng

Asian Ginseng

Asian Ginseng is one of the oldest and valued medicinal plants in the world. Ginseng helps in enhancing strength and immunity. While ginseng is relatively safe for use, it may cause a high heart rate, distress, or even insomnia. If you have any of these symptoms, consult a physician.



Ashwagandha is an ancient ayurvedic medicinal herb that helps in restoring energy, stamina, and metabolism. This herb best works for people with high blood pressure, insomnia, fatigue, and anxiety. Ashwagandha might have an inflammatory effect on people with gastric problems.



Traditional Chinese Medicine, eleuthero is effective for treating insomnia, muscle tensions, joint pains, and fatigue. Eleuthero is also helpful in treating mild depression. This herb is safe but might cause agitation, palpitations, or other cardio problems.



Rhodiola is helpful in reducing the stress hormone – cortisol. This herb helps in balancing cortisol variation in the body. It has positive effects on cognitive function, depression, and heart issues. Rhodiola is not the best supplement for people with bipolar disorder.

5.Tulsi/Holy Basil

Holy Basil

Tulsi also known as holy basil is a common ayurvedic herb that is used to treat anxiety, cholesterol, and immunity. Tulsi is not recommended for people with blood pressure problems and diabetes.

Adaptogens can be taken in many forms – pill, tea, smoothie, or just water. Adaptogens take time to work into the system but are easy to administer into the daily routine. Like other supplements – natural or synthetic – there is always a chance of side effects and allergies. Before adapting to these herbs, make sure that you are not allergic and prone to infections.
