In order to achieve long-term goals and maintain inner peace, we should learn to improve our self-control. Self-control is important for mental and physical wellbeing. Goals like quitting smoke, losing weight, reduce procrastination, saving money, and what not comes only from the capability of self-control.

As per different mindsets, the definition of self-control is different… some people learn to control to introduce discipline or some introduce self-control to maintain the willpower, grit, determination, and fortitude. In our everyday routine, we meet people, we go to office parties and the ability to control unhealthy food and alcohol use is self-control. Self-control might feel really tough in the beginning, but when you learn the ability to self-control, you win half of the battle then and there only.

Consecutively, with the help of self-control, you can simply achieve all the goals. The benefits of self-control are not only limited to physical appearance but also improve academic performance.

Three Essential Components of Self-control

There were various researches around the essential components of self-control. But, Roy Baumeister a famous psychologist introduced really effective three essential components of Self-control.

1. Clear Goal Setting and Motivation

Not having a clear goal can really be a stressful situation. Therefore, set a clearly identified goal you wish to achieve. Once you identify your goal, motivate yourself to achieve the goal within a timeframe.

After clearing out your actual goal and plan, stick on to your goals. Remember, as per 21\90 rule, it takes 21 days to change a habit and 90 days to adapt to the lifestyle.

Willpower is the main ingredient to have self-control. The ability to control your behavior is really important to achieve a goal.

Follow the below-mentioned ways to improve your self-control.

1. Keep planning

While you set a clear goal, set the situation wherein there is a possibility of breaking self-control. Every time you try to break the resolution, plan what you are going to do that time.

Every time you control yourself, plan to reward yourself. Do not stop the planning part, keep on planning, if you succeed on the first part, and plan to achieve goal 2.

2. Avoid all the Temptations

The best way to improve your self-control is to avoid all the temptations. Controlling the desire of spending, eating, quitting, drinking is to distract your mind. Whenever you feel like smoking, you can distract your desire with the help of nicotine-free tablets.

Or whenever you get a desire to eat something unhealthy, opt for something healthy. Or else, you can also opt to go out for a walk or call a friend in the phase of desire.

4. One goal at a time

Multi-tasking is a good thing but when it comes to achieving goals, it can be disastrous as well. Therefore, take one step at a time with one goal at a time for effective results.

5. Reward yourself

Whenever you achieve something reward yourself with something you always wanted to have. Or just simply appreciate yourself for the good work.

6. Meditate

There will be times when you will lose the ability to control, during such phases try to meditate. Meditation is one of the best ways to gain self-control of our mind, body, and soul. Additionally, meditation provides calmness and peace to the inner soul.
